Tooth Extraction

What is tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Tooth extraction, or the removal of a tooth, is a relatively common procedure.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

Even though their teeth are meant to be permanent. Here are a few of the reasons someone may need to get a tooth removed:

• Tooth infection or decay
• Gum disease
• Injury from trauma
• Crowded teeth
• Impaction

What is the process of tooth extraction?

At

Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis

we empathize and understand the concerns of the patients about getting the tooth extracted. However, a tooth extraction need not necessarily be a traumatic experience. With the modern and advanced pain management systems the pain may not be significantly felt. Care is taken at every step before, during and after the process of extraction.

Once the initial consultation is done, an X-ray is taken and antibiotics prescribed if necessary to reduce swelling and pain if existing, the tooth extraction is scheduled.

The tooth extraction may either be simple or surgical, depending on whether the tooth is visible or impacted.

Simple extraction

A local anesthetic is applied to the gums, which numbs the area around the tooth so only pressure may be felt, not pain, during the procedure. an instrument called an elevator is then used to loosen the tooth and forceps to remove it.

Surgical extraction

For surgical extraction also called known as open extraction both local anesthesia and intravenous anesthesia may be administered, the latter of which makes one calm and relaxed. One may also receive general anesthesia, depending on any medical conditions. With general anesthesia, the patient remains unconscious during the procedure.

The gum is cut open with a small incision. There may need to remove some bone around the tooth or cut the tooth before it can be extracted.

How to prepare for a tooth extraction?

Inform about any of the following conditions:

• a congenital heart defect
• diabetes
• liver disease
• thyroid disease
• renal disease
• hypertension
• an artificial joint
• damaged heart valves
• adrenal disease
• an impaired immune system
• a history of bacterial endocarditis

The dentist may want to make sure all conditions are stable or treated before one undergoes the tooth extraction. One might be prescribed antibiotics in the days leading up to the procedure if:

• The surgery is expected to be long
• One has an infection or a weakened immune system
• One has a specific medical condition
• It’s helpful to keep the following in mind for the day of the tooth extraction in order to ensure quality treatment:
• Do not smoke beforehand.
• Inform the dentist if one has a cold or fever, as the procedure may need to be rescheduled.
• Inform the dentist if one had nausea or vomiting the night before, which may require different anesthesia or rescheduling.
• Have someone along to accompany or drive back home

What is the recovery period from a tooth extraction?

It normally takes a few days to recover after a tooth extraction. The following steps help ensure that your recovery goes smoothly.

• Apply an ice pack to the cheek directly after the procedure to reduce
swelling. Use the ice pack intermittently for 20 minutes
• After the dentist places a gauze pad over the affected area, bite down gently
to reduce bleeding and to aid in clot formation
• Leave the gauze on for the duration mentioned by the dentist
• Take all medications as prescribed
• Rest and relax for the first 24 hours
• Avoid consuming any hot liquid or eatables
• Do not use a straw for the first 24 hours
• Do not smoke
• Do not consume alcohol
• Do not rinse for 24 hours after the tooth extraction, and spit only gently.
• Use pillows to prop the head up while lying down
• Brush and floss the teeth like normal, however, avoid the extraction site
• The day after the procedure, eat soft food
• After 24 hours, add a half-teaspoon of salt to eight ounces of warm water to
rinse out the mouth
• As healing takes place over the next few days, other foods can slowly be
reintroduced into the diet.

If one experiences pain that does not subside after several days or signs of an infection —including fever, pain, and pus or drainage from the incision — make an appointment to see the dentist as soon as possible.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction/Disimpaction?

Needing Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery can bring up many fears. Nevertheless, the procedure is safe, comfortable, and quick. Getting wisdom teeth removed is a routine office procedure at

Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis.

What is a Wisdom Tooth?

Wisdom tooth is one of the third and final set of molars to arrive in ones lifetime. These molars generally develop during the late teens and early twenties. The wisdom teeth come out during ones transition time from child to adulthood, a time when one is considered to be wiser. Hence the name wisdom tooth.

Why does a Wisdom Tooth need an extraction?

The human jaws can comfortably hold 28 teeth, not 32, when accounting for wisdom teeth. These 28 slots are filled before the wisdom teeth appear. So the addition of wisdom teeth growing is difficult when all 28 slots are filled up. With not enough space, an extraction may be necessary to avoid complications such as infection or impaction.

Costs of Wisdom Tooth Extraction

The total costs of extracting wisdom teeth vary. Cost factors include positioning, level of impact, number of teeth, and complexity. Every patient’s case is unique. Explanation of all the costs is determined after the examination. We will help you determine what insurance coverage you may have.

The best bet for a successful and uncomplicated tooth extraction procedure is to follow the dentist’s recommendations diligently before and after the extraction.

Tooth extraction makes room for something better and can help keep one smiling with health and confidence.

DENTAL IMPLANTS

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we love helping patients with an attractive and sparkling smile. One of the ways to accomplish this is by offering tooth replacement. We are skilled at providing a variety of tooth replacement based on the needs and demands to provide the best to our patients.

What is Dental Implant?

Dental implants are titanium cylinders (screws) that are surgically placed into the jawbone where there are missing teeth below the gums. Once in place, they allow the dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. The new tooth, a crown, looks and feels similar to the real teeth.

How do Dental Implants work?

Since implants fuse to the jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial teeth. Dentures and bridges mounted to implants do not slip or shift in the mouth, an especially significant benefit while eating and speaking. This secure fit helps the dentures and bridges — as well as individual crowns placed over implants — feel more natural than conventional bridges or dentures.

What are the benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants provide many advantages such as:

• Improved appearance
• Improved speech
• Better comfort
• Improved eating and chewing
• Greater self-esteem
• Oral health improvements
• Exceptional durability
• Convenient to use
• 90% surgery success rate

With these benefits, it is no wonder implants are a sought after cosmetic procedure. Getting implants provides both physical and psychological benefits.

Is there any downsides to Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a safe procedure to get. However, just like any surgery, there may be potential complications and drawbacks such as:

• Bleeding
• Infections
• Nerve, sinus, & cavity injuries
• Time commitment
• Multiple appointments required
• Possibly increased dental work needed
• Potential high cost, especially for multiple teeth

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we believe in being transparent. We go over all options and decide with the patient to see if Dental Implant is the right option.

Who Can Get Dental Implants?

For some, ordinary bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable or even possible, due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging. In addition, ordinary bridges must be attached to teeth on either side of the space left by the missing tooth. An advantage of implants is that no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down to hold the new replacement tooth/teeth in place.

To receive implants, one needs to have:

• Healthy gums
• Adequate bone to support the implant (or be a candidate for bone grafting)
• Excellent oral hygiene habits and regular dental visits to ensure the long-term success and health of the dental implants

Types of Dental Implants

Two types of implants are considered to be safe

Endosteal implants — Most commonly placed implants are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. Once the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a second surgery is needed to connect a post to the original implant. Finally, an artificial tooth (or teeth) is attached to the post-individually, or grouped on a bridge or denture.

Subperiosteal implants — These implants are used with patients who do not have enough healthy bone. A metal frame is fitted onto the jawbone below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Posts, which are attached to the frame, protrude through the gums. As with endosteal implants, artificial teeth are then mounted to the posts.

DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE

Dental implants are like metal anchors. They act as tooth root substitutes. The dentist places them surgically into the jawbone. Next is placing the small posts called “abutments” onto the implant. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth called “crowns.”

Placement of the implants involves two surgical procedures. First is placing the implants within the jawbone. For the first 3 to 6 months post-surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums. They will be gradually bonding with the jawbone. During bonding, one is able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. Concurrently, the restorative dentist designs the final bridge or denture. This final piece will ultimately improve both the function and aesthetics.

When the implant bonds completely to the jawbone, the second phase begins. The dentist uncovers the implants and attach a small healing collar. Then the process of making a new tooth begins. This step involves taking an impression. Then the abutments can connect to the implants. The replacement teeth cover over the abutments. This entire procedure usually takes several months for completion.

Oral care tips for Dental Implants

Most dental implants are successful, and there are a few steps one can take to help ensure success and make the implant last.

• Practice good oral hygiene – brush twice a day and floss once daily. Using interdental brushes, brushes that slide between teeth, can help clean the hard to reach areas around the implant.
• Quit smoking – smoking can weaken the bone structure and can contribute to implant failure.
• Visit the dentist – cleanings and exams every six months can help ensure the implant is in good condition, and that it stays that way.
• Avoid chewing on hard foods – do not chew on hard items such as ice and hard candy because they can break the crown and the natural teeth.

DENTAL FILLINGS

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we love helping patients with a beautiful and natural-looking smile. One of the ways to accomplish this is by offering dental fillings. We are skilled at providing a variety of fillings based on the needs and demands to prevent tooth decay and to arrest further deterioration of the tooth.

What is Dental Filling?

Dental filling is a type of restoration also colloquially called Dental Cement. Dental fillings are used to fill a cavity or an area on the tooth that has decayed material excavated or removed. The filling material will protect against more damage. Fillings are useful to help repair cracked or broken teeth.

What is the benefit of Dental filling?

Filling is a very versatile treatment that can do more than fix cavities. Some fantastic benefits of getting fillings are:

• Provides peace of mind due to durability
• Matches and improve the aesthetics of the teeth
• Certain fillings like the glass ionomer cement (GIC) release fluoride. This helps safeguard the tooth from further decay
• Helps provide additional strength and support to a weak tooth
• Helps prevent possible infections of the tooth, especially after a root canal treatment (RCT)
• Improves tooth function by making chewing and eating effective

What are the types of Dental Filling?

Dental filling can be prepared from a variety of material namely

• Silver amalgam
• Porcelain
• Composite resin
• Glass ionomer cement (GIC)
• Gold

The most suitable material is decided based on the need and the suitability to the tooth in consultation with the patient.

What is Composite Tooth Filling?

It is available in a variety of tooth shades and matches the shade of the natural teeth. It allows a natural blend and cannot be noticed or differentiated from the tooth. The resin composite fillings consist of a blend of ceramic and plastic.

What is the difference between Silver & tooth-colored fillings?

The most popular fillings that dentists use are glass ionomer cement (GIC), resin composite and silver amalgam. These fillings are commonly known as tooth-colored and silver. Silver fillings are popular due to them being economical and long-lasting. Resin fillings enjoy aesthetics being tooth-colored, providing an invisible appearance with these unique benefits also some drawbacks. Silver filling may cause allergies in some patients; while glass ionomer cement (GIC) and resin ones need periodic replacement and longer application times.

What is the life of a Dental Filling?

The life of the dental filling depends on several factors. The materials used plays a significant role in durability, as well as the cavity size and personal oral hygiene habits.

Dental filling is not a permanent fix. With proper care, the oral habits, the food habits and the PH value of an individual’s saliva, the filling may last many years, sometimes even decades. Each filling material has its own unique average life expectancy.

The good news is that these are averages. Patients can extend the life of their fillings with proper oral care. Contact Dhotrad’s Dental Clinics to learn more about how to take care of your teeth.

What’s the total cost to get filling done?

On average, expect fillings to be between a few hundreds to thousands based on the type of filling. Exact cost estimates are difficult to pinpoint due to a variety of factors. Final cost may depend on:

• Insurance carrier and elected coverage
• The number of cavities that need filling
• The size of the cavity
• Type of fillings chosen
• The location of the teeth that need fillings

Post consultation, the final cost can be decided.

If you have cavities, contact Dhotrad’s Dental Clinics today. Getting filling helps protect your teeth and prevent considerable deterioration in the future.

Let us help you get that beautiful glowing smile you deserve.

DENTAL CROWN

Our aspiration at Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis is to provide dentistry that is undetectable. That is why we provide dental crowns as a cosmetic offering. As the name implies, the crowns sit at the top of the tooth like a cap. The crown acts as a protective cover for the tooth. This dental restoration resembles the natural tooth resulting in an enhanced smile that makes one look and feel amazing.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is basically a cap for a damaged or a fractured tooth. It is designed from a variety of materials, including metal or porcelain.

What are the benefits of a dental crown?

A Crown provides a wide array of solutions for dental problems. Some advantages they offer are:

• Adds needed strength to weak teeth
• Restores teeth to a natural pleasing look
• Provides covering for a dental implant
• Covers teeth discolorations
• Holds a filling together

What are the types of dental crowns?

Different kinds of materials are used in crowns, including:

• Porcelain
• Ceramic
• Zirconia
• Metal
• Gold
• Composite resin
• A combination of materials

For case in point, one could have a porcelain crown that’s fused to metal, as opposed to an all-porcelain crown.

When selecting the material for the crown, your dentist considers factors such as:

The tooth’s location

• How much of the tooth will show when one smiles
• Position of the gum tissue
• Function of the tooth that needs the crown
• How much of the natural tooth is remaining
• Color of the surrounding teeth

The most suitable material is decided based on the need and the suitability to the tooth in consultation with the patient.

Temporary crown

A temporary crown is a crown that’ll only remain in the mouth for a short period of time.

It is placed over the tooth with an adhesive that can be easily removed, so it is not as strong as a permanent crown.

This is done while waiting for a permanent crown to be prepared. The permanent crown is placed on the tooth at a second appointment.

Who needs a crown?

If one has a large cavity that is too big for a filling, it may require a crown.

One may also need a crown if the tooth is:

• Severely worn down
• Cracked
• Weakened

Crowns are also recommended following a root canal on a tooth, because the tooth is more fragile and needs protection.

One may be a candidate for a crown if one has a missing tooth, and the dentist needs to put in a dental bridge or a tooth implant.

What is the life of a dental crown?

Variations in crown placement and other factors could affect the results in an actual person. All-ceramic and all-porcelain crowns may look more natural, but they’re usually not as strong as the metal or porcelain-fused-to metal versions.

The life of the dental crown depends on factors as oral hygiene habits, and the amount of wear and tear. When taken care of, crowns can last many years.

Alternative to dental crown

A dental crown may be the most recommend solution however alternatives exist.

A veneer is recommended in case a tooth is too weakened or worn down to support a regular filling.

Your dentist will most likely recommend the crown that works best for your specific situation or is the best alternative option.

DENTURES

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis our patients receive excellent dentures. The need for a variety of dentures of our patients is taken care of to ensure lovely and bright smiles and lives.

What are Dentures?

Dentures, also commonly known as false teeth or artificial teeth, are fitted to act as prosthesis for missing teeth. They are often made of acrylic, nylon, or metal. They can be used in place of one tooth, several, or all of the teeth, and they fit snugly over the gums.

Properly fitted dentures have numerous benefits, including improving speech, eating capabilities, and self-confidence. It can also help to prevent the face from sagging over time and may offer protection to the remaining teeth.

What is the benefit of Dentures?

Patients with missing teeth love dentures for the multitude of benefits they provide. Denture benefits include the following:

• Increases one’s self-esteem
• Improves the smile and appearance
• Provides facial muscle support
• Improves speech and communication
• Provides ability to enjoy foods that need teeth to consume and improved health
• Customized design comfort and function
• Ease of removal and placement
• Ease of cleaning and maintenance
• Many insurances provide denture coverage

What are the types of dentures?

There are many types of dentures or false teeth available for the patient to choose from, including partial dentures and full dentures. All necessitate fitting so that they match the teeth’s shape, size, and color.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures also known as removable partial dentures (RPD) are used if the patient still has some healthy natural teeth available. These dentures are often clipped around the remaining healthy teeth. These clips may be visible when you speak. However, they can be prepared in tooth-colored material.

Full dentures

Full dentures also known as complete dentures are used if all the teeth are lost or extracted, which may occur due to injury, infection, periodontitis, or other medical condition and extraction. These artificial teeth are attached to a plate that sits against the gums.

The plates and gum fittings — which can be made from either metal or an acrylic that matches the color of the gums — typically are not visible to others.

Adhesive may be used or required to help keep the dentures in place.

Removable dentures

Removable dentures are the traditional model, and they come with a big added benefit of being easier to clean.

They can, however, slip out of place more easily, so dentists recommend avoiding foods that are particularly chewy, sticky, or hard.

False teeth adhesive can help keep them in place, but these adhesives can be difficult to use.

Removable dentures typically last about a few years before they need to be replaced.

Price variations depend on the materials used, the number of teeth, and whether one is getting a single plate or two (both the upper and lower dentures).

Flexible dentures

Flexible dentures are a popular alternative to traditional dentures, and they are made with flexible but extremely durable material that is comparatively comfortable to wear. Thanks to the translucent resin that matches the gum color, they do not require any visible clips like those one might find with partial dentures.

Flexible dentures are also light weight and less bulky in the mouth.

What is the denture preparation and placement process?

For most patients, getting dentures is done in 4 steps.

• Getting mouth impressions
• Measuring the bite to see how the jaw comes together
• Trial on the denture, to see how it looks and feels
• Insertion of the denture

What is the cost of getting dentures?

Determining the final cost of getting dentures depends on several factors which include:

• Whether tooth extraction is needed
• Whether it is partial or complete denture
• The number of visits needed for the procedure
• The material of the base and the teeth
• Does the patient have dental insurance?
Is there insurance have coverage for implants?

What are the disadvantages of dentures?

While dentures provide great benefits, there are potential disadvantages as well.

• Complete ones may feel bulky, especially an upper set in the mouth roof. Lower ones may feel unstable as well
• The instability stemming from various muscles such as the tongue that can shift them
• A patient’s unique jaw anatomy may present complications

Alternatives to dentures

In addition to dentures, there are other alternatives that some individuals may find more appealing.

False teeth implants are permanent, thanks to a metal screw placed into the jawbone for stability before a false tooth is placed on top of it. One can have just one implant or a full set. Implants are significantly more expensive than dentures, though some people are happy to pay this for the permanence.

Veneers can help improve the appearance of existing healthy teeth by placing a thin layer of porcelain over the front of the teeth. They cannot replace missing teeth, however.

Bridges are another common alternative to dentures. Bridges are made up of false teeth that are held in place by a dental crown that is cemented to neighboring teeth or an implant. They are more permanent than removable dentures and may not require the implant process if healthy neighboring teeth are available.

How to maintain the dentures

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis we suggest the following

• Cleaning of artificial teeth everyday
• The best way to clean the dentures depends on the type of false teeth. Removing the partial dentures, for example, can make it easier to clean
• Use of cleaning solutions specific to dentures to help clean them effectively. False teeth require different solutions depending on the materials they are made from.
• To increase the lifespan of your false teeth, care while handling them.
• Avoid damage to any of the clips while cleaning
• Soaking the dentures overnight can prevent them from drying out and warping. However one needs to ensure to rinse them under water before placing into the mouth
• Avoid certain foods. Avoid drinking beverages that are hot enough to warp the dentures. It may also recommend avoiding foods that are tough like hard candy or chewy like gum
• Avoid dropping the dentures. Make sure the area where the denture cleaning is done is carpeted.
• While practicing the placement and removal ensure the floor is carpeted or stand against the bed.
• Always place them in or clean them with water that is at room temperature. Never wash or soak them in warm or hot water.

Possible side effects of dentures and solutions

Issue Solution Increased salivation when one first gets false teeth, especially immediate (temporary) dentures. Temporary nausea. This is normal and subsides as the mouth gets used to the new addition. Difficulty eating while getting used to the new dentures Start with soft and liquid foods to get accustomed to them Struggle to speak as compared to before getting dentures Gets easier as one get used to the dentures. Practice saying words that are difficult to pronounce to speed up the process Dentures can sometimes cause irritation or sores in the mouth while getting used to them This is common and often subsides as one adjusts. Gargle with salt water and maintain excellent oral hygiene to help treat these symptoms. High air pressure against removable dentures while coughing or sneezing Cover the mouth with your hand when sneezing, yawning, or coughing

Certain indicators that indicate that the false teeth need to be adjusted, refitted, or repaired

• Chips or cracks in the false teeth
• Difficulty chewing post the adjustment period (normally a week to a fortnight)
• Changing fit over time, where it is not as snug as it used to be (removable dentures may slip or fall out more often, which is normal after several years but requires refitting)
• Pressure sores from where the false teeth fit into place, especially after the adjustment period
• Consistent speech pattern changes that do not go away after the adjustment period
• Odor emanating from the false teeth

MOUTHGUARD

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, in addition to helping patients with a beautiful and natural-looking smile ensure care and safety of the teeth. We are skilled at providing a variety of Mouthguards based on the need to protect the teeth and to guarantee years of smiles.

What is a Mouthguard?

Mouth guard also known as nightguard or biteguard is a device used to protect the teeth from grinding or clenching while you sleep or from injuries while one plays sports. They can also help to reduce snoring and relieve obstructive sleep apnea.

However, not all mouthguards are the same. There are three main types, depending on the needs, including which ones are best for certain situations.

What are the types of mouthguards?

Stock mouthguards

A stock mouthguard is the most widely available and affordable type of mouthguard. One can find them at most sporting goods stores and drug stores.

They usually come in small, medium, and large sizes and fit over the teeth. Most stock mouthguards only cover the top teeth.

While stock mouthguards are easy to find and inexpensive, they do have some downsides. Due to their limited size options, they’re usually uncomfortable and don’t provide a tight fit. This can also make it hard to talk while wearing one.

Boil-and-bite mouthguards

Similar to stock mouthguards, boil-and-bite mouthguards are sold in most drugstores and are relatively inexpensive.

Instead of coming in a few sizes, boil-and-bite mouthguards come in one size that one can customize to fit ones teeth. This involves boiling the mouthguard until it softens and then placing it over the front teeth and biting down.

To get the best fit, one needs to make sure one follows the instructions that come with it.

Custom-made mouthguards

One can also get a mouthguard custom-made by the dentist. A mold of the teeth is taken and is used to create a mouthguard specifically for the structure of the teeth and mouth.

This provides a much better fit than either a stock or boil-and-bite mouthguard does, which makes them more comfortable and harder to accidentally dislodge while sleeping.

If one grinds the teeth, snore, or have sleep apnea, a custom-made mouthguard is the best option.

What type of Mouthguard should be used?

While different types of mouthguards look similar to each other, they have very different functions, namely

Sports

Certain sports and activities carry a high risk of falling or resulting in injuries that can impact the face. A mouthguard can help to protect the teeth and prevent them from injuring the lips or tongue.

It is especially important to use a mouthguard if one is involved in any of the following:

• Football
• soccer
• boxing
• basketball
• field hockey
• ice hockey
• gymnastics
• skateboarding
• in-line skating
• cycling
• volleyball
• softball
• wrestling

Teeth grinding

Teeth grinding and clenching are part of a condition called bruxism, which is a sleep-related movement disorder that can cause a variety of problems, such as tooth pain, jaw pain, and sore gums. It can also damage the teeth.

Wearing a mouthguard while sleeping can help keep the top and bottom teeth separated so they do not damage each other from the pressure of grinding or clenching.

If one is not sure whether one needs a mouthguard for bruxism, one can always try a boil-and-bite mouthguard for a few nights. If it seems to help, talk to the dentist about getting a custom guard.

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder that causes a person to temporarily stop breathing while asleep. This can prevent the brain from receiving enough oxygen and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. It can also cause excessive snoring and leave one feeling groggy the next day.

Instead of simply covering the teeth, a mouthguard for sleep apnea works by pushing your lower jaw and tongue forward, keeping the airway open. Some types have a strap that goes around the head and chin to re-adjust the lower jaw.

Snoring

Mouthguards can also help to reduce snoring, which happens due to vibrations of soft tissue in your upper airway. They tend to work similarly to mouthguards for sleep apnea. Both types work by pulling your lower jaw forward to keep the airway open. How to care for the mouthguard It’s important to protect your mouthguard from damage and keep it clean since it spends a lot of time in your mouth.
To get the most out of your mouthguard, follow these steps:
• Brush and floss teeth before putting in the mouthguard.
• Rinse the mouthguard with cool water or mouthwash before putting it in and after taking it out. Avoid using hot water, which can warp its shape.
• Use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean it after each use.
• Regularly check for holes or other signs of damage, which mean it needs to be replaced.
• Bring the mouthguard to any dentist appointments one has. They can make sure it still fits properly and works.
• Store the mouthguard in a hard container with some ventilation to protect it and allow it to dry out between uses.
• Keep the mouthguard out of reach of any pets, even if the guard is in a container.

Keep in mind that mouthguards do not last forever. Replace the mouthguard as soon as any holes or a sign of wear is noticed, or every two to three years.

Full Mouth Rehabilitation (FMR)

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we believe in providing comprehensive solutions to help patients maintain good health and bright smiles.

What is Full Mouth Rehabilitation (FMR)?

Patients with missing, uneven and/or damaged teeth may experience difficulty in speaking and chewing, and showing their best smile. Full mouth rehabilitation reconstructs the entire set of teeth to restore dental health to its optimal condition which improves appearance, quality of life and self-esteem. We provide the best quality dental restorations, implants and aesthetic dentistry and can help to recreate, whitened and/or replace your broken, chipped, or worn teeth in the mouth.

Who Requires a Full Mouth Reconstruction?

There are many who have dental problems throughout their mouths that must be treated comprehensively with a vision of a final result that improves both function and esthetics. These may include

• Multiple missing teeth due to decay or trauma
• Numerous teeth with large fillings that are failing
• Misaligned teeth that hampers your biting efficiency
• Short, severely worn or decayed teeth that are chipped and broken
• Experience teeth grinding and loss or worn teeth as a result of long-term acid erosion (foods, beverages, acid reflux)

Treatment Options for a Full Reconstruction

Dental Bridges

Dental Bridge or Fixed Partial Denture (FPD) is a fixed dental prosthetic. It can be handy in cases of partial tooth loss. A bridge, as the name suggests, forms a connection between two healthy teeth. The missing gap is filled with a replacement tooth or teeth.

A dental bridge is a false tooth that is held in place by the abutment teeth on either side of the gap. Although theses can be made from a variety of materials such as gold, typically it is made from porcelain to aesthetically blend in with the natural teeth to give a great smile.

Dental Crowns

A crown is basically a cap for a damaged or a fractured tooth. It is designed from a variety of materials, including metal or porcelain.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium cylinders (screws) that are surgically placed into the jawbone where there are missing teeth below the gums. Once in place, they allow the dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. The new tooth, a crown, looks and feels similar to the real teeth.

Inlays or Onlays

Inlays are a special type of filling that can address cavities and other damage, while onlays take care of more severe damage done to the cusps of a tooth. Both are cemented to the tooth after the damaged portion of the tooth is removed or prepared.

Porcelain Veneers

Dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that are attached to the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance. They’re often made from porcelain or resin-composite materials and are permanently bonded to your teeth.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a process of removing the stains or pigments from the exterior surface of the teeth to achieve natural white look of the teeth.

What are Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored coverings that are attached and cover the front surface of teeth (visible while smiling) to improve their appearance. They are often made from porcelain or resin-composite materials and are permanently bonded to the teeth.

Veneers can be used to treat a number of different cosmetic concerns, including chipped, broken, discolored, or smaller-than-average teeth.

What are the benefits of dental veneers?

The biggest benefit to veneers is it improves the appearance of the teeth, lending a brighter and relatively even smile. Dental veneers are often used to treat the following cosmetic occurrences:

• broken or chipped teeth • severe discoloration or uneven coloring that can’t be fixed with whitening • gaps in the teeth • smaller-than-average teeth • pointed or unusually shaped teeth

Veneers are a semi permanent investment one can make to achieve a confident and brighter smile.

What are the different types of veneers?

Dental veneers are most commonly made out of porcelain. Applying traditional dental veneers typically involves grinding down the tooth structure, sometimes removing some of the tooth even past the enamel. This allows for proper placement, but it’s also an irreversible procedure that may at times be painful to go through and often requires a local anesthetic.

No-prep veneers, on the other hand, may require some tooth preparation or alteration, but these alterations are minimal. Instead of removing layers of tooth under the enamel, no-prep veneers only affect the enamel. In many cases, no-prep veneers don’t require local anesthetics.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we help in creating a strong individual out of a child. Healthy children build healthy nations. We are dedicated to the oral health of children from infancy through the teen years. We have the experience to care for a child’s teeth, gums and mouth throughout the various stages of childhood.

What is a Pediatric Dentist?

Children begin to get their baby teeth during the first 6 months of life. By age 6 or 7 years, they start to lose the first set of teeth, which eventually are replaced by secondary, permanent teeth. With proper dental care, children can avoid possible oral decay and disease that can cause a lifetime of pain and complications.

What types of Pediatric Treatments does a child require?

• Infant oral health exams, which include risk assessment for caries in mother and child
• Preventive dental care which includes cleaning and fluoride treatments, as well as nutrition and diet recommendations
• Habit counseling (for example, pacifier use and thumb sucking)
• Early assessment and treatment for straightening teeth and correcting an improper bite (orthodontics)
• Filling of tooth cavities
• Management of gum diseases and conditions including ulcers, short frenulae, mucoceles, and pediatric periodontal disease
• Care for dental injuries (for example, fractured, avulsed, displaced, or knocked-out teeth)

We care for your child and you.

We understand the trauma of parents when their children have a dental problem. We also understand that your little Princess or Hero may not be a cooperative patient during a dental examination or treatment. We have the expertise with years of experience to know how to make them comfortable, examine and treat them.

Thus we suggest periodic checkup as a preventive measure.

We offer a wide range of treatment options for your little Hero or Princess’ teeth, gums and mouth. You can be assured that we provide the best possible care.

We wish you lots of smiles and happy moments.

ROOT CANAL

Root canals are tooth-saving procedures. The treatment design rids the inner tooth of infection. Ridding the infection through pulp removal and careful cleaning of the inner tooth. Followed by sealing of the tooth to prevent future infections. Thus preserving the tooth from a possible extraction.

What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal or commonly called RCT is a dental procedure that involves the removal of the soft center of the tooth, the pulp. The pulp is made up of nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels that help the tooth grow.

In the majority of cases, a general dentist or an endodontist performs a root canal while the patient may be under local anesthesia.

When is a root canal needed?

A root canal is performed when the soft inner part of a tooth, known as the pulp, is injured or becomes inflamed or infected.

The crown of the tooth — the part you that is visible above the gums — may remain intact even when the pulp is dead. The best option to preserve the structure of the tooth is to remove the injured or infected pulp.

Common causes of damage to the pulp include:

• Deep decay due to an untreated cavity
• Multiple dental procedures on the same tooth
• A chip or crack in the tooth
• An injury to the tooth (usually associated with a fall that may injure the tooth, sports injuries and due to injuries in contact sports. The pulp can be damaged even if the injury doesn’t crack the tooth.

The most common symptoms of damaged pulp include pain in the tooth, and swelling and a sensation of heat in the gums.

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we examine the painful tooth and take X-rays to confirm the diagnosis. The root canal may be advised if necessary.

How is a root canal performed?

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we ensure the best quality of treatment would be carried out with the following procedures.

Step 1: Local Anesthesia

A small amount of numbing medication is applied on the gum near the affected tooth. Once it has taken effect, a local anesthetic is injected into the gums. A sharp pinch or a burning sensation may be temporarily experienced.

You’ll remain awake during the procedure, but the anesthetic will keep you from feeling any pain.

Step 2: Removing the pulp

When the tooth is numbed, a small opening in the top of the tooth is made to gain access to the pulp. Once the infected or damaged pulp is exposed, it is carefully removed using special tools called files. Particular care to clean out all the pathways (canals) in the tooth is taken.

Step 3: Antibiotics

Once the pulp has been removed, the area may be coated with a topical antibiotic to ensure that the infection is eliminated and to prevent re-infection. Once the canals are cleaned and disinfected, the tooth is filled and sealed with a sealer paste and rubber-like material called gutta-percha. Oral antibiotics may be prescribed.

Step 4: Temporary filling

The procedure is completed temporarily by filling the small opening in the top of the tooth with a soft, temporary material. This sealant helps prevent the canals from being damaged by saliva.

Follow-up post the root canal

The tooth and gums might feel pain when the numbing medication wears off. The patient is advised to call or visit Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis if the pain becomes extreme or lasts for more than a few days.

One should be able to resume the normal routine of the day after the procedure. Avoid chewing with the damaged tooth until it is permanently filled or a crown is placed over the top.

The patient is advised to visit Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis a few days after the root canal. X-ray is taken to make sure that any infection is gone. The temporary filling may then be replaced with a permanent filling.

A permanent crown or cap is placed on the tooth to provide stability to the tooth structure. Crowns are artificial teeth that can be made from a variety of material like metal, porcelain or gold. The benefit of a crown is its realistic appearance.

It may take several days to get used to how the tooth feels after the procedure. This is normal and there is no cause for concern.

Risks of a root canal

A root canal is performed as an effort to save the tooth. At times, however, the existing damage is too deep or the enamel is too frail to withstand the procedure. These factors may lead to loss of the tooth.

Another risk is developing an abscess at the root of the tooth if some of the infected material remains behind. This usually happens if the canal is calcified or if the canal is dilacerated (bent) or if the antibiotics are not effective.

What after a root canal?

A root canal is considered a restorative procedure. Most people who undergo the procedure are able to enjoy the positive results for the rest of their lives. Yet, how long the results last depends on the way one takes care of the teeth.

Just as the rest of the teeth depend on good and proper oral hygiene habits; the restored tooth requires regular brushing and flossing as well.

What happens if you don’t get a root canal?

Skipping root canal therapy is not recommended. Patients sometimes believe that the tooth infection has healed and the pain has subsided. This, however, is a telltale sign that the infection has killed off the pain-sensing nerves. With an infection still present, this can weaken the tooth, leading to fractures or cracks that can ultimately lead to an extraction. Even worse, the untreated infection can spread to other areas of your mouth and body.

How to prevent getting a root canal?

Practice good habits and hygiene and avoid certain bad habits. These include:

• Brush twice a day
• Floss daily
• Wear a night guard if one is a jaw clencher
• Avoid acidic food and drinks
• Avoid hard foods
• Avoid chewing betel and areca, and gutka
• Be consistent with dental checkups and cleanings

GUM CARE

At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we believe that, it is not all about how straight ones teeth are or how bright the smile is. One cannot forget about the gums! Even if one is cavity-free and has the pearliest teeth that does not signify immunity to gum disease. Since gum disease is usually painless, most people have no idea that anything is wrong with the gums.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease starts when plaque builds up under and along the gum line. Plaque is a sticky film-like substance that is filled with bacteria. This can cause infections that hurt the gum and bone, leading to gum disease and tooth decay. Plaque may lead to gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. Gingivitis causes the gums to become:

• Inflamed
• tender
• red
• swollen
• prone to bleeding

Fortunately, since the bone and tissue holding the teeth in place are not impacted, this damage maybe reversible.

One may develop periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease, if left unattended to for long. Periodontitis impacts the bones that hold the teeth in place. Left untreated, it can ruin the gums, bones, and tissues connected to the teeth.

The final stage of gum disease is advanced periodontitis. This is when the fibers and bone supporting the teeth are destroyed. It may affect ones bite and teeth may need to be extracted.

Signs that you might have gum disease include:

• consistently bad taste or breath
• separating or loose permanent teeth
• gums that easily bleed
• gums that are swollen, red, or tender
• gums that have pulled away from your teeth

Gum disease is preventable. Here are a few ways you can help keep your gums healthy.

1. Floss

Floss at least once a day. This helps remove the plaque and food that is beyond your toothbrush’s reach.

2. Regular dental checkup and cleaning

A dentist can detect early gum disease symptoms if one visits on a regular basis. That way symptoms can be treated before they become more serious. A professional scaling is the only way to remove tartar. It can also get rid of any plaque that maybe missed when brushing or flossing. If one has gingivitis, brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings can help reverse it.

3. Quit smoking

Yet another reason for smokers to quit: Smoking is strongly associated with the onset of gum disease. According to trusted sources, smoking weakens the immune system and it also makes it harder to fight off a gum infection. In addition, smoking makes it difficult for the gums to heal once they have been damaged.

4. Brush twice a day

Brush teeth after every meal. This helps remove the food and plaque trapped between the teeth and gums. Scrub the tongue too, since it can harbor bacteria. Ensure the toothbrush has soft bristles and fit in the mouth comfortably.

Replace the toothbrush once every three months or immediately following a period of sickness, since germs and bacteria from sickness are harboured in the moist environment for 72 hours.

5. Fluoride toothpaste for adults

As for toothpaste, store shelves are lined with brands that claim to reduce gingivitis, freshen up breath, and whiten teeth. Consult the dentist to know which one is best for healthy gums. Make sure to choose toothpaste that contains fluoride The flavor and color is up to the choice of an individual.

6. Therapeutic mouthwash

Usually available over the counter, therapeutic mouthwashes can help reduce plaque, prevent or reduce gingivitis, reduce the speed that tarter develops, or a combination of these benefits. A rinse helps remove food particles and debris from the mouth, though it is not a substitute for flossing or brushing.

DENTAL BRIDGE

Getting a dental bridge is a great way to replace missing teeth. Bridges are a great alternative to wearing traditional dentures. Many patients prefer getting bridges when they need replacement teeth. At Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we place bridges that look entirely natural. With precise measurements and impressions we create replacement teeth that look and feel natural and comfortable.

What is Dental Bridge?

Dental Bridge or Fixed Partial Denture (FPD) is a fixed dental prosthetic. It can be handy in cases of partial tooth loss. A bridge, as the name suggests, forms a connection between two healthy teeth. The missing gap is filled with a replacement tooth or teeth.

A dental bridge is a false tooth (called a pontic) that is held in place by the abutment teeth on either side of the gap. Although pontics can be made from a variety of materials such as gold, typically it is made from porcelain to aesthetically blend in with the natural teeth to give a great smile.

Who is an ideal candidate for a Dental Bridge?

Ideally one can undergo a Dental Bridge treatment if one has a missing tooth or teeth and if the teeth at both sides of the tooth or teeth gap are healthy. Sturdy teeth that can support the bridge can have dental crowns placed over them

What are the benefits in getting a Dental Bridge?

Getting a dental bridge brings many fantastic benefits. Patients and dentists love the fact that bridges can:

• Restore a beautiful smile
• Bring back the ability to chew and speak properly
• Helps to maintain the natural shape of the face
• Equally distribute the bite forces through the teeth replacement
• Prevents the remaining teeth from drifting out of position

Types of Dental bridges

The four main types of dental bridges are:

1. Traditional
2. Cantilever
3. Maryland
4. Implant-supported

Traditional dental bridge

A traditional dental bridge consists of a false or artificial tooth or teeth being held in place by dental crowns that have been cemented onto each of the abutment teeth. A traditional bridge is the most popular type of dental bridge and can be used when you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap created by your missing tooth.

Cantilever dental bridge

Although similar to a traditional bridge, the pontic in a cantilever dental bridge is held in place by a dental crown that is cemented to one or more abutment tooth.

Maryland dental bridge

Similar to a traditional bridge, Maryland dental bridges employ two natural abutment teeth, one on each side of the gap. However, while a traditional bridge uses dental crowns on the abutment teeth, a Maryland bridge uses a framework of either metal or porcelain that is bonded onto the backs of the abutment teeth.

Like a traditional bridge, a Maryland bridge can only be used when you have a natural tooth on each side of the gap caused by the missing tooth or teeth.

Implant-supported dental bridge

As the name implies, implant-supported bridges use dental implants as opposed to crowns or frameworks. Typically, one implant is surgically placed for every missing tooth, and these implants hold the bridge in position. If one implant for each missing tooth isn’t possible, the bridge may have a pontic suspended between two implant-supported crowns.

Considered the strongest and most stable system, an implant-supported bridge commonly requires two surgeries:

1. One to embed the implants in the jawbone
2. A second surgery to place the bridge

It can take a number of months for the procedure to be completely finished.

What does a dental bridge cost?

There are many variables that can affect the price including:

• Number of teeth needed to fill the gap
• Materials used, such as composite resin, zirconia, or metal alloy covered in resin
• Complexity/difficulty of the placement
• Additional treatments for other dental issues, such as gum disease

The costs also depend on the type of bridge that you select

Bridge vs. Standard dentures or Removable Partial dentures

A significant difference between Bridge vs. Standard dentures or Removable Partial dentures (RPD) is that with Removable Partial dentures, they are removable. It is because of this removability that increases instability risk with dentures. Anything that can be removed runs the risk of becoming loose or even popping out. Many patients with active lifestyles prefer a bridge due to their stability.

Dental bridge vs. Dental implant

Many dental insurance plans cover bridges, and many now cover implants as well. A dental bridge may need to be replaced every 5 to 15 years, depending on proper care, while implants are considered a long term solution. There are factors that can reduce the life of all types of bridges, including implants, such as dental hygiene.

What is the treatment process?

Dhotrad’s Sunny Dental Clincis, we start with an examination and X-rays. This is needed to determine if the teeth have the strength to support a bridge. This also makes sure there is no decay or infection present. If there is, proper treatment is advised and done.

Next is the prepping of the anchor teeth for the crowns. Then an impression using suitable impression material or a non contact digital impression is taken. Next, the bridge and crowns are designed and created in the lab. A temporary bridge may be placed in the meantime. Finally, the ready bridge is placed to complete the smile process.
